LMS Training

Fundamental Training and Applications of the
Landscape Management System (LMS)

September 13-16, 2005

UW Pack Forest, Eatonville, WA

About the Workshop

The Landscape Management System (LMS) is a powerful forestry software program developed at the University of Washington in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and Yale University under the direction Dr. Chad Oliver and Dr. James McCarter. LMS is an evolving application designed to assist in landscape level analysis and planning of forest ecosystems by automating the tasks of stand projection, graphical and tabular summarization, stand visualization, and landscape visualization. LMS is implemented as a Microsoft Windows™ application that coordinates the activities of other programs (projection models, visualization tools, etc.) that make up the overall system. LMS is comprised of many separate programs that make projections, produce graphical or tabular displays, store inventory information, and connect these diverse programs into a cohesive system. LMS is available for download at no charge from the Web site of the College of Forest Resources Silviculture Laboratory at http://lms.cfr.washington.edu/lms.shtml.

The Rural Technology Initiative has joined with the Olympic Natural Resource Center and Peninsula College to provide an LMS training opportunity. James McCarter, Ph.D. from the University of Washington, College of Forest Resources is the primary instructor for this workshop. Participants will use Microsoft Excel® and Microsoft PowerPoint®. Participants will be provided with the LMS program on CD and the printed LMS tutorial. Desktop computers will be furnished for course use. Participants who bring their own laptop computers will be assisted in loading the software. Participants will be eligible to receive 19 Category 1 Society of American Foresters CFE credits.
