RTI GPS Training
GPS Workshop
June 13 - 15, 2004
Pack Forest, Eatonville, WA
About the Workshop
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a utility used
for a variety of purposes in forest and natural resource
management. GPS is an important tool for capturing and
generating data for a GIS (Geographic Information System).
Features such as roads, streams, wetlands, stand boundaries,
sampling plots, and bird nests can be mapped easily and
with high accuracy and precision. GPS is also used for
real-time navigation within the forest, for relocating
sampling and inventory plots.
This two-day workshop will introduce
the GPS technology, its theory (how and why it works),
and its use (how to
make it work for you). Students will gain hands-on
experience with state-of-the-art equipment in a real working
forest
setting.
Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able
to plan and execute GPS data-gathering missions and to convert
GPS data to common GIS formats. Students will receive 14.5
Category 1 Society of American Foresters CFE credits.
The instructor for this workshop is Phil Hurvitz, GPS
and GIS Specialist for the University of Washington. Phil
has been using GPS equipment for nearly a decade, advising
students, staff, and faculty
at the
College on the use of GPS. Phil will be joined by Ron McDuffie
of Frontier Precision, a local GPS equipment vendor with
over a dozen
years of experience with GPS technology.
